Wairarapa Hospital, Masterton provides abortion to 14 weeks of pregnancy.
If your pregnancy is further along than 14 weeks or there are significant medical or personal reasons you will be referred to Te Mahoe Unit in Wellington Hospital.
The First Step
You can book for an assessment by calling the clinic directly on 06 946 9800 ext 4903. The booking nurse will talk to you and organise some essential blood and swab tests, offer you a counselling appointment and book you in to the clinic at Wairarapa Hospital where you will be assessed by the clinic doctor.
Counselling is optional at Wairarapa Hospital, though the counsellors in the social work department are also very good at explaining the process so it is well worth talking to them, even on the phone. Once you have booked in with the clinic, the counsellor will give you a call to see if you would like to talk or meet up.
Medical Termination at Wairarapa Hospital
Medical Abortion is available up to 9 weeks of pregnancy for women who live within an hour’s travel of Masterton and are living in a home situation where miscarriage is practical.
The medication for the abortion MUST be taken whilst you are at the clinic. You will then return home for the miscarriage to occur, this usually happens between 1 and 8 hours after taking the pills. In some cases you will need to return to the clinic within 48 hours for a further dose of medication if the first dose has failed to make you miscarry.
Surgical Termination at Wairarapa Hospital
The procedure is done by vacuum aspiration under local anaesthetic (awake)
Follow-up is provided by the referring doctor or the operating doctor if preferred by the patient. Follow-up counselling is available in the Social Work Department if needed.
