Wellington Hospital

The Te Mahoe Unit in Wellington Hospital provides an abortion up to 19 weeks of pregnancy.

This service for the greater Wellington area (Capital & Coast and Hutt Valley DHB) and accepts referrals by arrangement from Mid-Central, Whanganui, Nelson-Marlborough, Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay and Tairawhiti DHBs.

National Abortion Telemedicine Service 

A nationwide early medical abortion by phone service (up to 10 weeks of pregnancy) is also available directly by contacting The Women's Clinic on 0800 ABORTION (0800 226 784) or via the website www.thewomensclinic.net.nz/contact 

 

The First Step

  • Self- referral is possible by phoning Te Mahoe  on 04 806 0761
  • Women can still be referred to the unit from FPA or their GP

Counselling

Counselling is optional but you will be given information explaining the process and contraception options for afterward. The counsellor is also available to you after you have been through the termination.

Medical Abortion at the Te Mahoe Unit

Medical abortion is available up to 9 weeks of pregnancy for women who live within one hour of a tertiary hospital, have a good understanding of English, reliable support and living in a home situation practical for a miscarriage.

Surgical Abortion at the Te Mahoe Unit

The procedure is done by vacuum aspiration under local anaesthetic (awake) up to 14+6 weeks of pregnancy.

For pregnancies between 14+6 and 19 weeks this operation is performed under general anaesthetic (asleep). Local women will require at a 2 day appointment schedule for second trimester abortions. If OOT (out of town) 3 days is recommended to anticipate any logistic schedule to organise and ensure safe to travel home.  This will be outlined to you before your appointment.

Follow-up

Postop check-up for all medical and surgical terminations are provided by your GP or FPA. Follow-up counselling is available at any-time, as above, through the counsellors at the Te Mahoe Unit or via telephone if out-of-town.
